NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised the government over the death of a Manipuri musician who was allegedly assaulted after objecting to a group of men creating a disturbance outside his residence in southeast Delhi, and sought a thorough investigation.
C Vikram Singh, 54, was allegedly beaten by delivery workers and dhaba employees in Kilokari village early Monday after he asked them to stop shouting and drinking alcohol outside his apartment, police said. Seven men have been arrested, while a minor has also been detained.
In a post on X, Gandhi said Singh had gone downstairs to request the men to reduce the noise and was beaten to death. He questioned the role of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s ministry and Delhi Police in addressing what he called “growing lawlessness”, particularly incidents involving people from the Northeast.
Gandhi also raised concerns over the safety of families from the region living in Delhi and called for swift action in the case.
Later, he spoke to Singh’s brother and expressed condolences to the family, Congress leader Pawan Khera said. Gandhi assured the family that their demand for justice would not be ignored.
Singh, who belonged to the Meitei community, had been living in Kilokari for several years. Police said a case was registered at Sunlight Colony police station.
Singh’s son Yaiphaba took him to Holy Family Hospital, where he died from his injuries. The North East Students Society, Delhi University, described him as a respected Manipuri musician and said he was attacked after asking a group allegedly drinking outside his home to lower the noise.
