BHOPAL/Two doctors and two nursing officers at the Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Rewa have been suspended following the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child during treatment, with Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla directing a fair and detailed inquiry into the incident.
Shukla said there would be no compromise on adherence to medical protocols or sensitive and respectful treatment of patients and their families. He directed officials to take strict action based on the findings of the inquiry committee and put corrective measures in place to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
The woman, identified as Kalpana Mishra, wife of Amit Mishra and a resident of Hatwa village in Rewa district, was admitted to the hospital’s obstetrics and gynaecology department at around 2.38 am on August 26. She and her unborn child died at around 11.55 pm the same day.
According to medical records, Mishra had a platelet count of around 30,000 per microlitre at the time of admission, along with severely elevated blood pressure and raised liver enzymes. She was diagnosed with term pregnancy complicated by severe pre-eclampsia, severe thrombocytopenia and HELLP syndrome.
The action followed a complaint by the woman’s family alleging misbehaviour by medical staff and negligence in treatment. A committee comprising senior doctors has been constituted to investigate the allegations.
Duty doctor Sonal Agrawal of the obstetrics and gynaecology department and Nidhi Pandey of the anaesthesia department were suspended with immediate effect for prima facie gross negligence in duty and serious indiscipline, officials said.
Two nursing officers were also suspended following allegations of misbehaviour with the patient’s family.
At the family’s request, post-mortem examinations of the woman and the foetus were conducted by a joint team of the district hospital and medical college in Rewa. After completion of the necessary procedures, both bodies were transported to the family’s native village in an ambulance.
