BHOPAL/Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary Anurag Jain, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog, the Centre’s premier public policy think tank.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday approved the appointment.
According to an official order, Jain will assume charge with immediate effect and serve as CEO for the duration of his approved extension in service. Thereafter, he will continue in the post for an overall period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. His appointment will be on the same terms and conditions as those applicable to his predecessor.
Jain, one of the senior-most IAS officers from the Madhya Pradesh cadre, brings nearly four decades of administrative experience spanning key assignments in both the Centre and the state government. During his career, he has handled important portfolios related to infrastructure, urban development, industry, finance and governance reforms, earning a reputation as an efficient administrator and policy strategist.
As CEO of NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog, Jain will head the government’s apex policy institution responsible for fostering cooperative and competitive federalism, supporting evidence-based policymaking and coordinating the implementation of national development priorities. The appointment assumes significance as NITI Aayog continues to play a central role in advancing the Centre’s vision of Viksit Bharat through long-term policy planning, innovation and state-centre coordination.
Jain’s elevation is also expected to have implications for the Madhya Pradesh bureaucracy, where he has been serving as Chief Secretary. The state government is now expected to initiate the process of appointing a new Chief Secretary following his move to New Delhi.
His appointment is seen as strengthening NITI Aayog’s leadership with an officer who has extensive experience in public administration, infrastructure development and policy implementation.
