AMRITSAR: The movement of multiple suspected drones near the operational area of Amritsar international airport late Sunday night led to the diversion of seven flights, including two international services, to Delhi, officials said on Monday.
The suspected drone activity was detected around 10 pm near the runway, triggering an immediate security response. The Punjab Police and central security agencies were alerted following the sighting of the drone-like objects.
Shri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport Director Anirudh Kumar said several suspected drones were seen hovering around the airport’s operational zone, following which the police were informed.
Flight operations at the airport remained suspended for around 90 minutes as security agencies assessed the situation.
Officials said the suspicious objects were spotted close to the runway area, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures and divert incoming flights.
Services operated by Malaysia Airlines, IndiGo, Air India and Air India Express were among those affected by the disruption.
Authorities continued to monitor the airport’s operational area following the incident and stepped up security measures in response to the suspected drone movement.
