Gwalior Municipal Corporation Budget: Focus on Making City ‘Self-Reliant’

BHOPAL / With an aim to make Gwalior city ‘Atmanirbhar’ (self-sufficient), Gwalior Municipal Corporation(GMC) on Monday proposed its budget of Rs 1,388 crores for the financial year 2022-23 with a profit of Rs 3.27 lakh.

Giving relief to the people of music city -known for classical music maestro Tansen, the GMC did not provision any fresh taxes and did not hike existing taxes too following the state government. keeping in mind the 2023 Assembly elections, the Madhya Pradesh government has not provisioned any burden of the new taxes on the public of the state,  in the recently presented state’s budget.

The administrator of the GMC, Ashish Saxena who is also the commissioner of Gwalior and Chambal divisions and Commissioner of the urban body Kishore Kanyal informed while addressing a press conference that for the financial year 2022-23, a total of Rs 18,88,29,43000 and a sum of Rs13,68,73,07,000 had been provisioned as an income and the expenditures respectively while a net profit of Rs 3,27,600 would be got to the Corporation.

“Aiming to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), It has been focused on making a happier city where people can enjoy the heritages of the Gwalior, like classical music, history and the rehabilitated historic urban quarters,” Kanyal, commissioner GMC told the reporters. “We are trying to connect people to participate in making a beautiful and pollution-free city where people can enjoy a peaceful and prosperous life, the commissioner of GMC added.

The SDGs were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog endorsed all 17 SDGs such as no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace and justice and partnership for the goals.

“The provisions have also been made in the budget to reduce air pollution and increase the air quality in the urban area, and to improve the water table a project of renovating the 1500 water bodies such as well, dams and ponds have also been proposed”, Kanyal further added.

Replying to a query, the GMC commissioner said, “we have also kept in mind the new concept, ‘carbon credit’. keeping in mind, a proposal of developing green space in the city has also been provisioned in the budget.”
The ‘carbon credit’ – a crucial concept to protect urban air pollution because urban trees improve air and water quality, reduce energy costs, and improve human health,” he further added.

GMC commissioner emphasised that the city can be made beautiful, developed and self-sufficient only when its economic condition is strong so various efforts are being made to increase the income of the Corporation.

– Target of revenue collection is Rs 369 crore
-Paver block will be manufactured from the raw material of dismantled buildings to ensure hygiene and a beautiful city
-Rs 90 crores for new roads and Rs 37 crores for repairing old roads
-Rs 7 crores to promote e-vehicles
-Provision for drinking water to bring it from the Chambal river, Kotwal dam, etc.
