BHOPAL / Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday unveiled the statue of former Gwalior MLA and former Leader of Opposition in the Gwalior Municipal Corporation, Raghuveer Singh ‘Babuji’, at Akashvani Tiraha in Gwalior.
Yadav also announced that Akashvani Tiraha would henceforth be named after the late leader in recognition of his contribution to public life and social service.
Paying tribute to Singh, Yadav said every person’s work is ultimately assessed by future generations. He said Singh had contributed to the freedom movement while following the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and had inspired his colleagues to participate in the struggle for independence at a young age.
“Babuji” had a long public career, serving in the municipal corporation and later as a legislator, Yadav said. He was consistently at the forefront of struggles for people’s rights and set an example of social service through his work in the Gwalior region, he added.
Union Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who attended the event, described the occasion as an emotional one. He said Singh had worked alongside his father, former Union minister Madhavrao Scindia, when he represented Gwalior.
Scindia said Singh had always risen above party politics and remained committed to public service. Recalling his association with Singh since childhood, he said the former legislator had served freedom fighters at the age of 14. After studying agriculture, Singh worked extensively for the welfare of farmers and society.
“He was gentle at heart but remained firm on his principles,” Scindia said, describing Singh as a true social worker who would continue to inspire the people of Gwalior.
Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar recalled Singh’s contribution to the welfare of workers and said working with him as a municipal councillor had been an unforgettable experience.
Singh’s son Ram Sundar Yadav said the installation of the statue was an emotional moment for the family. He said the family’s third generation was now dedicated to public service.
According to family members and speakers at the event, Singh was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and had participated in the freedom struggle as a child volunteer. During his political career, he raised issues concerning farmers, the poor and other sections of society.
The event was attended by New and Renewable Energy Minister Rakesh Shukla, Gwalior MP Bharat Singh Kushwaha, Rajya Sabha member Ashok Singh, MLAs Pritam Singh Lodhi and Mahendra Singh Yadav, Madhya Pradesh State Forest Development Corporation chairman Ramniwas Rawat and a large number of citizens.
